The endearing small town of Rhede is also known as the "Smile of Münsterland". With lots of greenery and lively activity, it conjures up a smile on the faces of its guests. Situated between Bocholt and Borken, Rhede not only offers its own sights, but also many attractive excursion destinations in the surrounding area. Whether on foot or by bike - the varied landscape between the Netherlands and the Lower Rhine is well worth discovering.
In the town centre, numerous historic buildings invite you to explore. The townscape is dominated by the imposing St Gudula’s Church. There are numerous restaurants and cafés around the church with outdoor seating, especially when the weather is nice. The shopping street invites you to take a leisurely stroll through the town’s shops. In bad weather, the medicine and pharmacy museum is a popular destination.
The year is marked by events such as the "May Sunday", the "Rheder Kirmes" or "Rhede’s Winter Fairy Tale with Moonlight Stroll" in the cosy town centre. A visit to Rhede Castle, which is only a few metres from the town centre and well worth seeing, is also a must.
The Borken district offers a charming landscape with opportunities for rest and relaxation, attractive places and buildings of cultural and historical value, including numerous castles and manor houses surrounded by beautiful parks. The region is wonderful to explore by bike on signposted cycle paths or freely chosen routes. In between, the local gastronomy invites you to enjoy a savoury or sweet refreshment.
The Borken district is also an ideal starting point for excursions to the Netherlands. With a shared border of 108 kilometres, there are many interesting destinations in the neighbouring country, such as the attractive city centre of Enschede or the weekly market in Winterswijk. The Borken district offers countless opportunities for spontaneous cyclists: Circular tours, themed routes or trips on small "Pättkes" can be combined into day or multi-day tours as desired. With the "Fietsenbus", the radius of action can be easily extended: During the cycling season from 1 May to 3 October, several bus routes are equipped with bicycle trailers on Sundays and public holidays.
The most convenient way to travel is by car - that way you stay flexible. But you are also well connected by public transport: There is a bus stop just a 5-minute walk away. From there, the Sprinterbus S75 travels directly to Münster, or you can take a regional bus to Bocholt or Borken. From Bocholt, the "Der Bocholter" train will take you to Wesel, where you can change to the RE5 regional express train to Düsseldorf.
